SCC Announces Pirate Promise with East Carolina University

Thursday, June 4th, 2020

ECU Interim Chancellor Ron Mitchelson and SCC President Dr. William Aiken recently signed the Pirate Promise agreement between the two institutions.

“This new agreement with ECU is an indication of the strength of North Carolina’s Comprehensive Articulation Agreement, which makes it easy for community college students to transfer to our public universities,” said Dr. Michael V. Ayers, Vice President of Academic Affairs. “We especially appreciate how this agreement recognizes the importance of completing an associate’s degree at Southeastern.”

With the Pirate Promise, SCC students who fulfill the following criteria will be guaranteed admission to ECU:

  • Enrolled in an Early College, Career and College Promise program, or is in his/her first year of enrollment prior to applying for the Pirate Promise.
  • Completed the Pirate Promise application.
  • Committed as full-time status (a minimum of 12 semester hours) at SCC unless the student is enrolled in an Early College or Career and College Promise program.
  • The student completes degree requirements for an Associate in Science, Associate in Arts, Associate in Fine Arts, Associate in Engineering, Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, or an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) for the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology or a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management programs.
  • The student must submit an ECU admissions application, provide supplemental documents, and meet admissions requirements as stated in the ECU Undergraduate Catalog including a 2.5 or higher GPA.

“One of the aims of Southeastern Community College is to provide important linkages with the four-year universities for students.  This agreement solidifies an important milestone with East Carolina University,” said Dr. Aiken. “Making decisions about higher education is often a complex process for students. This option permits students to begin the thought process earlier in their high school career which will hopefully eliminate some of the anxiety surrounding choice.  We look forward to working with ECU in implementing this program.”

The agreement also comes with great benefits including:

  • Waived ECU application fee
  • Joint academic advising and financial aid counseling and scholarship opportunities
  • Access to ECU libraries and ECU transit
  • Eligible to purchase an ECU student ID card, discounted athletic tickets, fitness center pass, student parking pass, and permit.
  • Access to ECU programming through the Office of Student Activities and Organizations at ECU
  • Access to Pirate Promise Event days on ECU’s campus.

“We know East Carolina University is the university of choice for many Columbus County residents. We are excited to assist students as they enroll in this program and prepare to join the Pirate Nation” said Vice President of Student Services, Dr. Sylvia Cox.
