Sherida Coatney and Ian Ashley were recently announced as the recipients of Southeastern Community College’s Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to second-year MLT students who are about to enter their final semester of the program. Funding for the scholarship is acquired through contributions from MLT Club fundraisers and donations from the community.

Coatney, of Clarkton, is a graduate of West Bladen High School. She completed her Phlebotomy degree and has been working as Phlebotomist while studying Medical Lab Technology. Ashley, of Wilmington, is a graduate of New Hanover High School.

The Medical Laboratory Technician is the scientific investigator of medicine. The MLT performs lab tests on body fluid specimens to discover biologic clues which lead to the diagnosis of disease. Graduates from the program have achieved a 90% overall pass rate on the certification exam since the program’s inception in 1995. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (5600 N. River Road Suite 720, Chicago, IL 60018, 733-714-8880).
