Policy 4.10 - Verification of Financial Aid

 Students are often selected for a process called verification. The process provides a consistently methodical means of verifying a student’s eligibility based on their completion of the Federal Application for Free Student Aid (FAFSA), and ensures that students are awarded in accordance with federal regulations governing the appropriate disbursement of eligible funds. 

 Verification may be requested on the basis of either “dependent” or “independent” student status, in relation to the information a student provides when submitting their FAFSA application to the College. 

 Students (and their parents, if the student is dependent) are required to link their financial information to the FAFSA from the IRS using the Data Retrieval Tool.  If this is not completed, students- and parent, if applicable- are required to submit an official tax return transcript from the IRS which can be ordered via post, or printed from the IRS.gov website. These documents are to be submitted to the Financial Aid Office along with any other requested documents needed to verify the student’s FAFSA information. 

 As of the 2012-13 academic year, students will be required to utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to link their financial data to their FAFSA. If tax returns are linked using the Data Retrieval Tool, the financial portion for verification may be- in some cases- fully or partially waived. If the individual(s) are unable or unwilling to use the link option, they will need to request official tax return transcripts from the IRS, and provide those transcripts to the Financial Aid Office. Individuals can contact the IRS online at www.irs.gov. 

 If an individual(s) does not file taxes and is required to do so, they DO NOT qualify for federal financial aid. If any corresponding numbers on taxes are discovered to be incorrect, the taxes must be amended before processing can begin. Amended tax returns cannot be linked with the IRS data retrieval tool. 

  Verification Deadline 

 Once a student is selected for verification, they are required to submit all documentation that was requested in the communication email. 

 Eligibility Changes Resulting from Verification 

 If the verification process results in a change of a student’s financial aid eligibility, SCC repackages the student for financial aid based on their new eligibility status and notifies the student with a new award letter. 

 Corrections are made in the Financial Aid System and sent to the Central Processing System (CPS) through Colleague.
