Loss of SCC Staff Member Sylvia Tart McQueen

Untitled-1

Dear SCC campus community,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Sylvia Tart McQueen, Southeastern Community College Registrar, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021.

Sylvia joined Southeastern Community College (SCC) as a student in 1996 where she also served the college as an SCC Ambassador before graduating with an Associate in Arts degree. She had worked in several positions at the college including an academic vocational skills specialist, she taught classes, worked in the bookstore, and in 2005, she became the Registrar.

Sylvia was passionate about her “Rams Family” and embodied true SCC pride. She was vocal about perseverance and how important education is in our community. She was a role model who exemplified how attending SCC can change the trajectory of a person’s life. Sylvia was truly a lifelong ambassador of the college.

In my short time of knowing Sylvia, she was always a bright spot in my day. She was quick to exchange a few jokes and always had a big, contagious laugh to go along with them.

The loss of a teacher, colleague, and friend can be painful. SCC has resources available for support as we begin the grieving process. Anyone that would like to talk about their grief or concerns they may have can contact Bill Maultsby, Director of Human Resources, to discuss the benefits available at (910) 788-6310.

Please join me in sending prayers of gratitude for Sylvia’s life and the impact she had on the SCC community, and to ask for strength and healing for those who loved her and are deeply saddened by her loss. Sylvia will be greatly missed.

In sympathy,

Dr. Chris English

Southeastern Community College President
