Black’s Tire Service Establishes 1st Automotive Scholarship at SCC

Monday, January 30th, 2023

Students participating in automotive technology at high schools in the county will now have an opportunity to further their education at Southeastern Community College (SCC) and may qualify for a new scholarship to help fund their college expenses.

Thanks to Blacks Tire Service and the Benton family, four scholarships, one at West Columbus High School, East Columbus High School, South Columbus High School, and Whiteville High School, will be awarded to students who are continuing their automotive education at SCC.

Black’s Tire, VP of Sales and Marketing, Rick Benton presented the check and shared the excitement of his family’s business.  “It means a lot to help support our communities,” said Benton. “This is our future and there is so much opportunity in the tire and automotive industry. We look forward to growing together with the leaders of tomorrow.”

SCC President, Dr. Chris English, stated, “We are most appreciative to Blacks Tire and to the Benton family for establishing this scholarship.  The support will assist students as they transition from their high school training to the SCC Automotive program, which will help them with successful careers in the automotive industry.”

The $2,500 scholarship will be available for the 2023-2024 school year beginning this fall.  High school counselors will be receiving information on the criteria for the scholarship in February. Accepting the donation from Blacks Tire is Director of the SCC Foundation, Terrie Priest.
