POLICIES AND PROCEDURES |Technology Services | 7.11 Instant Messaging| 7.11.1 Procedure

Instant Messaging Procedure

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to define the acceptable use of instant messaging and to extend the policies outlined in the Use of Information Systems Policy. The rules set forth in this policy are designed to protect Southeastern from technology abuse or misconduct. Inappropriate use of instant messaging exposes the college to risks including virus attacks, compromise of network systems and services, and potential legal issues.

Guidelines

Instant messaging can be defined as real-time email and as such, all policies and guidelines pertaining to email also apply to instant messaging including the Email Retention Policy.

GroupWise Messenger is a business product that logs instant messaging sessions. The IS staff has the ability to view these logs. However, it is not the policy of the institution to routinely view such information but must occasionally do so to troubleshoot issues and when required for legal issues. Absolute privacy should not be expected from this or any other business product.
