PURPOSE OF ASSESSMENT WORKBOOK

The purpose of this booklet is to provide students with the opportunity to review sample problems and questions prior to taking the Placement Assessment. The Internet also has Web sites that contain sample questions and tips to help students prepare for the assessments.

PURPOSE OF THE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

Admission to Southeastern Community College (SCC) is not based upon performance on the Placement Assessment. However, all students entering the college are required to take the Placement Assessment to place them into the appropriate course levels based on their academic skill. All curriculum degree-seeking and diploma-seeking students and veterans are required to take the reading, sentence (English skills), keyboarding, and mathematical assessments, unless otherwise specified. In addition, students enrolling in certain certificate programs also may be required to take one or more sections of the Placement Assessment. Information about exemptions can be found at SCC’s Web site:

http://www.sccnc.edu

The Placement Assessment is given several times a week throughout the year and during registration periods. For specific dates and times, call SCC’s Admissions/Counseling Office (910-642-7141, ext. 279) or check the SCC Web site. There is no charge for the assessments.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCUPLACER ONLINE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

ACCUPLACER ONLINE© is the assessment tool used by SCC. The ACCUPLACER ONLINE© Placement Assessment is a comprehensive computerized system that aids SCC counselors in placing students into appropriate courses and providing the information SCC advisors need to maximize student success. The Placement Assessment is not timed, so students may work at their own pace.

ACCUPLACER ONLINE© is a computerized placement tool that utilizes adaptive assessing technology to measure students’ reading, sentence (English) skills, and mathematical skills. Results are generated and reported immediately after completion of the assessment.

Because of the adaptive nature of the assessment, one question is presented at a time. Once the answer is submitted students are unable to go back and change answers. Students are encouraged to eliminate some choices and then guess if they do not know the answer to a question.

For the Placement Assessment schedule,
refer to SCC’s Web site:

Students also may call after 5 p.m. and leave a message on voicemail. If a schedule conflict arises, students are requested to call and reschedule.
  • Regular Scheduled Assessment Times: 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. Walk-in Placement Assessment also is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

FREQUENTLY ASKED PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS

Who takes the Placement Assessment?

Students entering SCC are required to take the Placement Assessment. This assessment tool is used to determine the student's academic skills level in keyboarding, reading, sentence (English) skills, and mathematics.

Students re-enrolling at the college after three years may retake the Placement Assessment upon the recommendation of the Admissions/Counseling staff.

Is the Placement Assessment timed?

The reading, sentence skills, and mathematics sections of the Placement Assessment are not timed; students work at their own pace. The only part of the assessment that is timed is the keyboarding skills assessment. The goal is 30 words per minute in three minutes with three or less errors. Students have three attempts to meet the goal.

Students take the assessment at a computer workstation with technical assistance provided by the Assessment Administrator.

On average it takes students 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete the entire assessment.

What do I need to bring?

SCC supplies everything students need for the assessment: pencils and
scratch paper. Use of calculators and other electronic devices is not permitted during the assessment.

What if I am not comfortable using the computer?

Please call Angie Uhl-Kalev at (910) 642-7141, ext. 263 for assessment
alternatives.

Individuals with Disabilities

Individuals with a disability or with a temporary disabling condition who wish to receive accommodations for the assessment must provide appropriate documentation to the counselor prior to the assessment. For more information, call Angie Uhl-Kalev at 910/642-7141, ext. 263.

Where can I find other sample questions and/or assessment strategies?

ACCUPLACER Sample Questions are available at www.sccnc.edu.

ACCUPLACER SAMPLE PROBLEMS AND QUESTIONS

Students will find samples in the following areas: reading, sentence (English) skills, and mathematics. The mathematical areas will include arithmetic, elementary algebra, and college algebra. The intent of these samples is to give students an idea of the kinds of questions to expect when they take the Placement Assessment. The samples are not actual assessment questions.

In the keyboarding section of the assessment students are required to type two paragraphs. The goal is 30 words per minute in three (3) minutes with three (3) or less errors. Students have three (3) attempts to meet the goal.
