The SCC library building opened to the public in 1986. With over 65,000 volumes, 164,279 pieces of microform, 3000 record albums, and 150 current printed subscriptions, the library collection is one of the largest in the North Carolina Community College System.

The library is located between the Student Center (“G” building) and the Child Development Center (“H” building), behind the multipurpose (“M”) building and in front of the Allied Health (“R”) building. The library has the letter “L” displayed on the front of the building. There is a “Welcome” sign posted on the kiosk in front of the library.

Of particular interest to community members is the library's large genealogy collection and The New York Times from its beginning in 1851 to the present day. An interlibrary loan service allows students, faculty, staff, and community members alike to obtain materials from other libraries.

Open to SCC students and personnel and to the general public, the library collection includes books, periodicals, audiovisual material, various online services, and other resources.

Circulation Policies:
Library Cards -- A person should apply for a library card at the circulation desk and must present this card each time he/she needs to borrow materials. The first card issued to a patron is free, with a charge being made for replacements. These cards are available to SCC students, faculty, and staff and also to community users (high school age and above). The owner of the card is responsible for any material charged in his/her name.

  Length of Loan:
1. General Circulation -- Students and public patrons may check out books and audiovisual materials for two (2) weeks. The loan may be renewed for two (2) additional weeks if no one else has requested the material. Renewals must be made in the library, and not by telephone.  Faculty and staff may borrow materials for one semester, the materials being due back to the library on the first day of final exams of that semester. Consecutive renewals of books are permissible at the discretion of the librarian.

2. Reserve Material -- At the request of faculty or staff, library staff members place certain resources on reserve for various groups of students. These materials are available for either two (2) hours, overnight, or one week and being due at 10:30 a.m. on the respective dates.
