The Pre-Mathematics Associate in Science program is designed for students who have chosen a career in a mathematics related field and who wish to transfer to a senior college or university to pursue a four-year degree with a major in a mathematics related area. SCC also offers an Associate in Science Mathematics Education program to prepare students with a foundational understanding of mathematics so they can complete coursework leading to teacher certification and a bachelor's degree in secondary mathematics at a four-year university or college.
Both of the Associate in Science (A.S.) programs require 44 hours of general education core coursework as well as 21 hours of additional studies to prepare students to continue their education at a four-year institution and/or enter the workplace immediately upon graduation. The courses in these programs include courses in mathematics as well as other general education areas to help meet four-year degree and state requirements in the field.
Students should contact the four-year institution to which they intend to transfer for assistance in deciding which courses at Southeastern are most appropriate for their major.
Students should also consult with their advisors to help plan a program of study to complete program course work and fulfill the minimum general education competency requirements that must be met prior to graduation.
Students who graduate from these programs typically pursue advanced degrees leading to employment in as actuaries in risk management or operations research using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and manipulate mathematical and computer models of organizational systems or statisticians who help determine what information is reliable and which predictions can be trusted. Positions are available in fields such as medicine, government, education, agriculture, business, and law.
