The online Invasive Species Management program is the first of its kind in the world to provide individuals with training and field experience in controlling invasive species – with a focus on invasive plants. Invasive Species Management is a concentration under the curriculum title of Environmental Science Technology. This curriculum prepares individuals for employment related to invasive species management in various agencies. Emphasis is placed on prevention, regulation, detection, eradication, and long-term control.
Course work includes general education, computer applications, general biology, chemistry, environmental science, environmental biology, environmental health, industrial safety, and detailed invasive species management courses related to the concentration.
Graduates of the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program may choose to transfer some credits to selected colleges and universities for further study and/or pursue employment opportunities.
Vocational diploma programs are designed specifically for those who wish to enter a trade prior to completing an associate degree and may be completed in as little as three semesters by non-developmental students on a full-time basis.
Certificate programs train men and women for immediate employment and may be completed in as few as one or two semesters on a full-time or part-time basis.
Students should consult with their advisors to help plan a program of study to complete program course work and fulfill the minimum general education competency requirements that must be met prior to graduation.
Invasive species cost the American economy over $150 billion annually. They are the number two threat to native plants and animals in the U.S.; yet, efforts to control invasives are under-coordinated and under-funded. Compounding the problem is a lack of trained management efforts. Southeastern offers the first college-level program in the world to train invasive species managers.
People seeking invasive management positions generally have training in biology, forestry, agronomy or related fields. This unique program offers continuing education and a certificate that will provide the necessary education and training for invasive species managers. Students may choose to complete classes for continuing education requirements, a certificate in Invasive Species Management, or an associate in science degree in Environmental Science Technology with a second-year focus in Invasive Species Management.
Graduates should qualify for invasive species technician positions within the public and private sectors (e.g., federal, state, and local land management agencies, private conservation organizations, and invasive species management companies.
