Purpose

The mission of SCC's Education programs is to prepare students with an understanding and foundation of various literacies needed for the bachelor's degree experience, the teacher certification process, and employment in the public school system. In addition, the college offers art, math, biology, business, marketing, ASL interpreting, chemistry, and general education programs that may be used to prepare graduates for eventual employment as teachers in a variety of settings.

The purpose of the Lateral Entry (Teacher Training) certificate program is to certify lateral entry teachers currently working in North Carolina. Southeastern Community College will work in concert with a partner institution to ensure that students have the opportunity to successfully complete the certificate program.

The state of North Carolina frequently needs to certify lateral entry teachers, especially in rural regions such as that serviced by Southeastern Community College. The NC Department of Public Instruction requires individuals to complete a state-approved teacher education program from a regionally accredited college or university (if one wants to teach at a public school in a full-time capacity) or to complete an Associate's degree (if one wants to work as a Teacher's Assistant). In addition to the successful completion of a given program, student must universally complete the PRAXIS I Reading, Writing, and Mathematics battery with a cumulative 522 minimum score. Southeastern Community College can position itself to take an integral role in supporting students through the credentialing process.

Course Requirements

The courses in this degree program are selected from the Associate in Arts degree offerings but also include more courses in education to help meet four-year degree and state requirements in the field. The lateral entry certificate program introduces students to classroom management and instructional strategies, educational policies and procedures, learning theory, educational technology, and developmental psychology.

Associate in Arts (A.A.) and (A.S.) programs require 44 hours of general education core coursework as well as 21 hours of additional studies to prepare students to continue their education at a four-year institution and/or enter the workplace immediately upon graduation.

Certificate programs train men and women for immediate employment and may be completed in as few as one or two semesters on a full-time or part-time basis.

Students should contact the four-year institution to which they intend to transfer for assistance in deciding which courses at Southeastern are most appropriate for their major.

Students should also consult with their advisors to help plan a program of study to complete program coursework and fulfill the minimum general education competency requirements that must be met prior to graduation.

What can graduates expect to achieve with a Certificate or Degree in Education?

Graduates of these programs transfer to other institutions of higher learning to complete further studies. The primary purpose of the education programs is to enable students to eventually secure a position as a teacher or administrator in public and private school systems.
