DEVELOPMENTAL READING
The reading developmental education program at Southeastern Community College is designed to help students achieve academic success by developing or enhancing reading skills. These skills are necessary for success in college-level coursework. Student placement into developmental classes is based upon the Accuplacer Assessment, taken prior to enrollment in the college.

How do developmental reading courses help students succeed?
Students who successfully complete developmental reading course will accomplish the following:
- Develop strategies for independent learning
- understand that reading is essential and necessary for success in his/her academic, personal and professional life
- learn effective study skills for future college classes

Each level of developmental reading offers a higher degree of skills mastery in:
- specialized college-level vocabulary
- reading comprehension
- critical thinking
- test-taking strategies
In which college courses will reading skills be most essential?
Most college courses rely on reading as a way for students to learn information and prepare for class. Biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, government, history and others course will usually require students to read large amounts of material. Students who develop strong skills and strategies for reading and interpreting difficult vocabulary and concepts are better equipped to successfully complete these courses.
Do I receive college credit for taking a developmental reading course?
While developmental reading courses do carry credit at SCC and many other community colleges, these classes do not count towards a degree, nor do they transfer to 4-year institutions. However, semester credit hours for developmental courses do count as part of a students course load for financial aid eligibility.
