DEVELOPMENTAL ENGLISH
The English developmental education program at Southeastern Community College is designed to help students achieve academic success by developing or enhancing English skills. These skills are necessary for success in college-level coursework. Student placement into developmental classes is based upon the Accuplacer Assessment, taken prior to enrollment in the college.

In which college courses will English skills be most essential?
Most college courses require students to demonstrate their knowledge of course material through written assignments. Writing-intensive courses such as literature, history, sociology, political science, and psychology will challenge students to research, think critically, and deliver their responses in writing. Exam questions, research reports, online assignments, and in-class assignments all require students to communicate course information effectively in writing. Students who develop strong writing skills and strategies for approaching writing assignments are better equipped to successfully complete college courses.
Do I receive college credit for taking a developmental English course?
While developmental English courses do carry credit at SCC and many other community colleges, these classes do not count towards a degree, nor do they transfer to 4-year institutions. However, semester credit hours for developmental courses do count as part of a student's course load for financial aid eligibility.
