PERSONAL COUNSELING

Our counselors are trained professionals who can respond to your concerns in an objective and nonjudgmental manner while providing you with an environment in which you can speak freely, privately and confidentially.

Difficulty concentrating or completing academic tasks, family or relationship problems, difficulty managing stress and lack of motivation are some of the most common problems for which students seek help. Click the questions below to find out more.

What should I know about the counseling session(s)?
Students may be seen for short-term counseling on a limited basis and may engage in one to three counseling sessions. Students who need ongoing therapeutic counseling are referred to an outside agency.

How do I contact a counselor?
A student may be referred by faculty, staff, self, or other student, and may walk in, call, or email a counselor to receive services. Counseling is available in person, over the phone, or by email for on-line counseling. In case of an emergency, call 911.

Are the sessions confidential?
The content of counseling sessions as well as information about students who seek counseling is kept strictly confidential. Counseling information will only be released with the student's permission. The counselor will inform you of any general limitation to confidentiality during the first session.

Benefits from counseling
The counseling process is an educational experience. A student not only learns more about himself/herself but also may learn new skills to cope with personal, social, and academic demands. Below are some examples of what students may gain from personal development counseling:

~ Improved communication and interpersonal skills
~ Greater self-acceptance and self-esteem
~ Increased confidence and decision-making skills
~ Ability to manage stress effectively
